City airport gets global tag

May 04, 2017 12:00 am | Updated 04:25 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday put its seal of approval for the declaration of the Vijayawada Airport as international airport, as per the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

A statement issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry here said the proposal would improve connectivity to the State capital besides wider choice of services at competitive costs. It would also give a boost to the domestic/international tourism and socio-economic development by bringing in international passengers and cargo traffic.

In a background note, the statement said declaration of an airport as international depended upon traffic potential and demand from airlines for operation of international flights.

It said the Vijayawada airport had the potential for passenger traffic growth.
