Two youths were swept away in Nanjangud, near Mysuru, and at Koppa taluk in Chikkamagaluru district in rain-related incidents on Tuesday.
Musafir Sharief, 28, who went for a swim in the swollen Kapila in Nanjangud was swept away in the swirling waters. Sharief, a native of Nanjangud, was running a timber business.
He had gone with five of his friends to the old bridge across the river when they decided to swim across to the opposite bank. Eyewitnesses said all of them jumped from the bridge to the river and began swimming, but Sharief was swept away. A search operation was launched on Wednesday morning and Fire and Emergency Services personnel and expert divers scoured the river. But the operation became difficult as the water level continued to rise because of the increase in outflow from the Kabini reservoir in H.D. Kote.
Though local people in the vicinity averred that the six youths took a challenge to swim across the river and decided to take the plunge, Sharief’s family members said they were mere rumours.
