Two students die in accident

HYDERABAD: Death of two college students near Subhash Nagar crossroads at Trimulgherry on Saturday evening led to tension as enraged locals damaged vehicles and set afire an Octroi checkpost of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board.

Around 4.30 p.m, Shantinath (20) and Annapurna (19), students of Loyola Degree college, Alwal, were returning on a Kinetic Honda when a vehicle, suspected to be a lorry, hit them from behind. They were killed on the spot and the driver fled the scene. Learning of the accident, an enraged mob pelted stones at passing lorries, damaging 30 vehicles. The mob then set fire to the Octroi checkpost in the locality. As tension gripped the area, police arrived and pacified the mob.

The police said there was no eye-witness to the accident. A case was registered and search was on for the driver.

While Shantinath, a resident of Prakash Nagar, was a B. Com final year student, Annapurna, a B.A second year student, was a resident of Malkajgiri. Shantinath was son of Premnath and Annapurna daughter of Balraj.

"This road is so dangerous. I am sure that I too will meet the same fate if I take this road on a motorcycle," was how Hyderabad Police Commissioner A. K. Mohanty, who drove down the road after the accident, reacted. He directed his officials to carry out a survey of the area.
