Wells beats Shirov in 13 moves

Gibraltar: Top seed Grandmaster Alexei Shirov of Spain was beaten by Grandmaster Peter Wells of England in just 13 moves in the sixth round of Masters chess tournament here.

GM Sandipan Chanda continued his winning streak by defeating Marcel Peek of Holland. Chanda, with 4.5 points in his bag, is joint-fourth along with 10 other players.

Overnight leaders GM Jon Speelman of England drew with former World junior champion Kirili Georgiev of Bulgaria and remained in joint lead on 5 points along with Viktor Bologan of Moldova who defeated veteran Viktor Korchnoi to reach 5 points out of a possible 6.

Apart from Chanda, IM S. Kidambi did well to hold third seed GM Nigel Short of England. With this draw, Kidambiremained on course for his second GM norm, inching to 4 points out of a possible 6.
