Vijay Kumar emerges champion

Amby Valley (Lonavala): Beating back the challenge from Shiv Kapur, Ashok Kumar and S.S.P. Chaurasia made, Vijay Kumar of Lucknow won the Amby Valley PGA Championship of India by a comfortable two-stroke margin.

Chourasia and Shiv Kapur finished joint second. Vijay took home the winner's cheque of Rs 7.29 lakhs.

Vijay started the day with a three-stroke lead over Shiv Kapur, four over Ashok Kumar and six over Chourasia.

Playing safe

At the end of the first nine holes Vijay playing safe had a card of one over, while Chaurasia played to four under and had come within one stroke of Vijay.

Shiv Kapur with two birdies on the front nine (third and seventh) too was just one behind Vijay holding out promise of an exciting finish. Shiv and Chaurasia, however, were off target on the back nine and both carded two over 38 to share the second prize.

In the amateur section Jaideep Patwardhan ran out winner by 12 strokes.

Gaurav Ghei 283 (70, 69, 76, 68); 6. Mukesh Kumar 286 (71, 73, 71, 71); 7. Rahil Gangjee 287 (72, 76, 70, 69) and Amandeep Johl 287 (71, 69, 71, 76).

Amateurs: 1 Jaideep Patwardhan 306 (72, 71, 82, 81); 2. Amit Nigam 318 (81, 77, 77, 83); 3. Mehul Rastogi 323 (82, 81, 78, 82); 4. Neil Mundra 325 (80, 84, 84, 77).
