CHENNAI OCT. 13. Tamil Nadu pocketed the girls under-19 and under-15 titles in style on Monday in the National junior inter-State squash championship at the TNSRA-SDAT courts here.

The result was not unexpected but what stood out was the dominance of the host. That its star player Joshna Chinappa made an appearance only for this last round-robin match is ample reflection of the depth of talent in the Tamil Nadu side. Both the titles were annexed at the expense of Maharashtra.

Meanwhile there was more to come for Tamil Nadu with the boys' semifinal getting decided in the evening. In the final of the under-19 section, Tamil Nadu will take on Maharashtra but in the under-15 section the two Maharashtra teams will vie for honours. The finals will be held on Tuesday.

Both the semifinals in the under-19 category were straightforward contests with Tamil Nadu eclipsing New Delhi and Maharashtra accounting for its `B' team. In the under-15 section, Maharashtra got the better of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra `B' defeated Rajasthan. All the wins had a 3-0 margin.

But the focus was on the girls. Shahnaz Dastur faced Joshna and could grab just three points, Madhura Pranjpe did better earning nine points in all against Shruthi Reddy but Shivangi Paranjpe could muster nothing against Sonali Philip. A shade better was Maharashtra's effort in the other section. But Shibani Philip, Dipika Pallikal and Anvesha Reddy were too strong for Madhura, Shivangi and Nikita Emanuel.

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu boys were tested by the Maharashtra `B' team. Saurav Ghosal's fluency notwithstanding, Parthiban needed to touch his best to get past the higher-rated Rushabh Vora. The two having met before and Vora having had victories over the Tamil Nadu player, the contest was keen. Parthiban however emerged victorious to place Tamil Nadu on top of the pool. A loss for Parthiban could have taken the issue to the wire.

The results: Boys: Under-19: semifinals: Tamil Nadu beat New Delhi 3-0 (Saurav Ghosal beat Dhruv Dhawan 9-0, 9-0, 9-2; A. Parthiban beat Arjun Sachdev 9-4, 9-1, 9-1; Vinayak Shetty beat Avneet Singh 9-0, 9-0, 9-1).
