Sriram Balaji is champion

CHENNAI, AUG. 14. Sriram Balaji was not at his fluent best. The 14-year-old top seed from Coimbatore, training at Perks MHSS, committed numerous unforced errors and double faults — 13 to be precise.

But he pulled up his socks in time to notch up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Vinay Kamineni of Andhra Pradesh in the boys' under-14 final of the India Pistons AITA junior (Super Series) tennis tournament at the Krishnan Tennis Centre, Kottivakkam here on Saturday. He had earlier paired with V. Sudharsan to emerge triumphant in doubles.

Sushrutha Reddy of Andhra Pradesh overcame an early resistance from Tamil Nadu's Janani Suresh 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to clinch the girls' under-14 singles title.

Trained by S. Narendranath and Vasudeva Reddy in Hyderabad, Sushrutha picked up after initial hiccups to win the contest in an hour and 30 minutes. The boys and girls' winners received 50 and 40 AITA points respectively.

N. Venkatramani, Managing Director, India Pistons, gave away the prizes.

The results (finals): Boys (under-14): Sriram Balaji (TN) bt Vinay Kamineni (AP) 6-3, 6-4.

Girls (under-14): Sushrutha Reddy (AP) bt Janani Suresh (TN) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
