Somdev Dev Varman gets T.K. Ramanathan Award

CHENNAI, APRIL 24. Somdev Dev Varman was presented with the 2003-04 T.K. Ramanathan Award at the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association's Annual Day celebration at the Nungambakkam SDAT Stadium on Saturday.

The award, worth Rs. 30,000, was presented by former Indian star Ramesh Krishnan to the 19-year-old for winning the $10,000 ITF Futures tennis tournament in Kolkata last month.

Sandhya Nagaraj, E. Ashmita, Gayathri Krishnan and Jeevan Nedunchezian won Rs. 4000 each for representing India in the World Cup. In all, prize money worth Rs. 1,29,600 was given away.

The winners of the respective zones in the Sanmar-TNTA league 2004 also received cash awards at the function. MCC `A', which won Zone A, was awarded prize money worth Rs. 10,000, while the runner-up, Gandhinagar `A' won Rs. 5000.

The other league winners included YMCA Nandanam `A', Anna Nagar Club, YMCA Kilpauk `B' and Nungambakkam Tennis Club's `A', `B' and `C' teams. Gandhinagar Club won Rs. 5000 for winning the inaugural UCAL-TNTA interclub women's tennis league championship for 2004.

Speaking on the occasion, Krishnan congratulated TNTA for playing a significant role in ensuring that the Chennai Open, India's only ATP event, would continue to be played in the city.

The chief guest, M.B.N Rao, chairman & managing director, Indian Bank, remarked that earlier, Chennai was known as the intellectual and cultural capital of the country. "That was in the old days; today, the city is also known for the Krishnans and the Amritraj brothers. Soon, we hope, someone from here will win at Wimbledon," he said.

N. Sankar, chairman, Sanmar Group also gave away prizes on the occasion. Senior TNTA officials, including president V. Narayanan, were present.
