Shubhomoy impresses one and all

NEW DELHI MARCH 29. Shubhomoy Das enabled East Zone avoid follow-on but failed to notch up his hundred. The 21-year old got out for 97 (278 minutes, 14 fours) against North Zone on the final day of the Duleep Trophy league match, which ended in a draw at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here on Friday.

Shubhomoy, in his debut season, impressed the way in which he laboured to save East from follow-on. As the youngster received enough support from No. 10 Saurashish Lahiri (40, 73 minutes), East managed its immediate task of reaching 418. The visiting side eventually was bowled out for 459, after adding another 105 runs on this day.

North, which gained a lead of 108 runs, replied with 186 for four in its second innings. For the host, Sarandeep Singh finished with a five-wicket haul. It was the off-spinner, who again put East under pressure with the wickets of Lakshmi Ratan Shukla (58, 108 minutes) and Utpal Chatterjee in the space of 12 runs and reduced East to 385 for eight after it resumed at 354 for six.

East handled the twin-blow well and went on to achieve the task of saving the follow-on without much worry.

As Shubhomoy collected two boundaries in one over from Sarandeep, East got closer and Lahiri did the rest by heaving left-arm spinner Sanghvi for a straight six. However, just when Shubhomoy looked set for a century he was out attempting a cut off Sanghvi.

With a sloppy effort on the field, North did not help its cause either. Sanghvi dropped Lahiri off his own bowling when East needed another 24 runs to prevent following on.

North's second innings included a fine 48 (four fours) from Shafiq Khan. The Haryana batsman missed out on his second half-century of the match. While attempting a wristy stroke, Shafiq lost his balance and was stumped by Zakaria Zufri.

By adding five points on the basis of its first innings lead, North took its tally to 10 points from three matches. East, which had started with an outright win against Central, has 11 points from two matches.

In the next set of matches, starting from April 2, North plays its last match against Central in Indore while East will meet South in Chennai.
