Sania toys with Mawisire

Hyderabad Oct. 28. Indian players chalked up easy wins in their respective quarterfinal matches in the individual events of the tennis competitions of the first Afro-Asian Games at the Lal Bahadur stadium tennis complex here today.

In the women's singles quarterfinals Sania Mirza thrashed Fadzai Mawisire of Zimbabwe 6-1, 6-0. The latter was no match for the Indian player whose control and accuracy over her shots left nothing to chance. The hapless Zimbabwe player was hardly able to put up a fight.

Every point scored by the Hyderabad player was met with loud cheers from the boisterous crowd made up mostly of school and college-going children who seemed to have taken a day off from their classes to watch the various tournaments. It was an encouraging sight to see the stadium packed almost to capacity to cheer the Indian players.

On Monday also there was a huge crowd cheering the Indian men and women to victory in the team championships. Although sometimes the cheering disturbed the players concentration and the spectators had to be cautioned to maintain silence, it did indicate that the event has drawn good response and the players are tremendously popular with the young crowd.

Rushmi Chakravarthy faced a slightly stiffer challenge from Berthe Khady of Senegal. But Rushmi after taking the first set without much difficulty managed to win the second in the tie-breaker to enter the semifinals. Indonesia's Sandy Gumulya put up a good show to defeat African Games champion Udofa Clara of Nigeria 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in another quarterfinal. In the men's singles quarterfinals Vijay Kannan breezed past Sri Lanka's Harshana Godamane 6-1, 7-5.
