Sanaa downs Nadja Roma

NEW DELHI: Sanaa Bhambri defeated qualifier Nadja Roma of Sweden 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the ITF women's tennis tournament in Helsinki, Finland.

Sanaa's sister Ankita, however, lost 2-6, 3-6 to Veronika Dhvojkova of the Czech Republic in another first round encounter. The Bhambri sisters lost in the pre-quarterfinals of doubles 5-7, 3-6 to Veronika Chvojkova and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic.

In the third leg of the Chinese Satellite, Ashutosh Singh beat Benoit Bottero of France 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Two other Indians crashed out in the first round. Jaco Mathew lost 6-3, 2-6, 4-6 to Amir Weintraub of Israel while qualifier Divij Sharan lost 4-6, 1-6 Patrice Atias of France.

In the ITF Futures tournament in Makassar, Indonesia only Gurmehar Singh crossed the first hurdle. He, however, lost 2-6, 1-6 to Oh-Hee Kwon of Korea in the pre-quarterfinals after beating another Korean Cheong-Eui Kim 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

In other matches, Pathanjali Ravishankar lost to Tasuku Iwami of Japan 4-6, 6-4, 3-6; Tushar liberhan lost 2-6, 0-6 to Guilheme Ochia of Brazil and Vijay Sundar Prashant lost 2-6, 2-6 to Tetsuya Chaen of Japan.

In the ITF women's tournament in Nottingham, Britain, the top-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi lost 2-6, 6-2, 2-6 to Lucy Fletcher of Britain. The third-seeded Shruti Dhawan lost 1-6, 0-6 to Svenja Weidemann of Germany and Radhika Tulpule too went down 1-6, 0-6 to Jade Curtis of Britain.
