Samresh in lead despite modest score

INDORE, OCT. 7. Defending champion Samresh Jung produced a below-par score by his standard on Thursday, but given the way others shot, he should safely make it to the eight-man final in the 50m free pistol event in the 48th National shooting championship at the Reoti Ranges near here.

Jung scored 549 out of 600 and was placed on top of the list with Navy's Tapas K. Sikdar and Indo-Tibetan Border Police's (ITBP) Umesh Chandra following him with 546 points each. Of the 44 entries, 31 shooters finished their opening round on Thursday while others will shoot early on Friday with the final scheduled in the afternoon.

"Today I was a bit slow. I cannot really describe what actually happened," said the Central Industrial Security Force's (CISF) Jung. Just a week ago in Delhi, Jung had shot good scores of 558 and 567 in the `routine trials' conducted for the selection of national squad for the ISSF events in 2005.

"A score of 567 is a good, medal-winning score for free pistol. But today Jung seemed off colour, but it is natural in shooting," said the National coach Prof. Sunny Thomas.

Shweta in limelight

Indian Airlines' Shweta Choudhary stole the first day's honours in 25m sports pistol event for women as she shot 289 out of 300 to lead both the senior and junior championships.

After the 30 shot of precision target shooting, Shweta led the field by three points ahead of Army's Saroja Kumari (286). There will be another round of 30 shots on Friday over duelling targets with the final eight decided on the basis of aggregate of two rounds.

National record holder and defending champion, Sushma Rana of CISF, was lying sixth after the first round with a score of 282. "She is a strong shooter on duelling targets and should be up there after the second round," Prof. Thomas said.
