S. Africa thrashes Malaysia

MANCHESTER July 26. Olympic and Commonwealth champion Australia opened with a 3-0 win over Scotland and South Africa thrashed Malaysia 11-0 in Pool 1 women's field hockey matches at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The Australians were held scoreless until the 28th minute against the Scots, who were inspired by a visit from Queen Elizabeth II before the match.

Angie Skirving set up the first goal with a cross from the right side to unmarked Triny Powell, who tapped in from the far post.

``We were pretty nervous, we have a lot of new players but we're happy to get that one out of the way,'' said Australia's captain Katrina Powell. ``We're looking forward to the next one.''

Brooke Morrison powered a drag flick into the top corner to make it 2-0 three minutes before halftime and Julie Towers added a third in the 65th minute as Australia extended its winning stretch against Scotland to 17 matches.

Striker Sophie Mayer scored three goals as the South Africans dominated against Malaysia, powering to an 8-0 halftime lead.

``It was difficult to maintain a consistent standard and not let it drop,'' Mayer said. ``We just concentrated on us and goals for our team.''
