Rastogi downs Clarke

GURGAON: Karan Rastogi overcame an exasperated Irishman Peter Clarke and stormed into the semifinals in the second leg of the ITF men's Satellite tennis tournament at the NTA Complex here on Thursday.

Despite losing the first set 2-6, Rastogi opened up a 3-0 lead in the second set. The top seeded Clarke returned with a flurry of returns in the next game however, an experienced Rastogi broke Clarke again in the fourth game that almost underlined the course of the remaining match.

With one set apiece, Clarke took a medical break. Rastogi retained his concentration and when the game resumed there hardly was any difference in way the Indian played. Rastogi's forehand returns and matching strokes wrong-footed Clarke many a times.

Rastogi messed up quite a few easy volleys. He nonetheless recovered in time and with two breaks he was 4-1 up. Having ignored Clarke's tantrums for long, the umpire finally docked him a point penalty when he kept strolling while Rastogi was ready to serve. Rastogi then earned two match points and after losing the first, he won the match when Clarke double faulted.

Rastogi meets Kazakhstan's Alexey Kedriouk in the semifinal on Friday.

Kedriouk defeated Vivek Shokeen 6-0, 7-5 in an hour and 25 minutes. In the bottom half of the draw, Arjun Goutham gave himself a shot at semifinal berth beating a fellow qualifier, Clement Rousseau of France in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in an hour and two minutes. Arjun faces second seeded Sunil Kumar Sipaeya in the second semifinal.
