Prashanth scalps six

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Off spinner P. Prashanth took six wickets to stake a claim for a spot in the Ranji Trophy team as KCA Reds restricted KCA Blues on the third day of the KCA Trophy cricket match at the LNCPE ground on Wednesday.

After the truncated first two days, the weather cleared up to allow a full day's play and KCA Reds crawled to 249 for seven in 127 overs. C.M. Deepak grafted a painstaking half-century (65) while Abhishek Hegde (34), Vipin Lal (31) and Sebu (33) chipped in with useful knocks.

Kozhikode posts win

Kozhikode and Malappuram posted victories in the North Zone (under-13) inter-district cricket championship in Kozhikode on Wednesday.

The scores: Kasaragod 90 for eight in 25 overs (Sachin Dev three for 16) lost to Kozhikode 91 for no loss in 19 overs (K. Aswin 39 n.o.); Malappuram 90 for nine in 30 overs (Mathew four for 17) lost to Wayanad 86 for nine in 30 overs (Rajkumar four for 41, Fajaz four for 12).

Police athletics meet

The 36th all-Kerala Police athletics meet will begin at the Chandrashekaran Nair stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on Friday. Nearly 800 athletes including former internationals Roy P. Joseph, Martin and Vivek are expected to take part in the three-day meet, which will feature competitions in 60 events.

A cross-country race involving the policemen and the public will be held on Saturday. The Kerala Sports Council president Mr T.P. Dasan will flag off the race from the Chakai bypass. The race will end at the Chandrashekaran Nair stadium. A cash prize of Rs 5,000 will be given to the winner of the race from among the public. The second and third place winners will get Rs 3,000 and 1,000 respectively. The corresponding prize money for the policemen is Rs 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 respectively. The organisers have requested the interested participants to report at the venue at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning.
