Over 600 athletes vie for honour

BANGALORE MAY 29. Big time athletics returns to the Garden City , with the conduct of the 42nd Senior national Inter state athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava stadium from June 1 to 3.

The Kingfisher-UB Group of Companies sponsored event is sure to be high draw affair what with the competitors in the middle of a busy national and international schedule and hence in pink of condition.

The three Asian Grand Prix events at Hyderabad, Bangkok and Manila over the last two weeks was a good testing ground for the star performers.

The likes of K. M. Beenamol in the women's one-lap event wherein she had the satisfaction of besting Asia's top 400m runner Damayanthi Darasha sure would have provided the impetus for greater deeds ahead what with the Commonwealth Games (Manchester), the Asian Track and Field (Colombo) and the Asian Games (Pusan) scheduled for later this year.

I. A. Shivananda in the long distances (300m and 5000m) and Bahadur Singh and Navpreet Singh in the shot put, K. M. Binu in the men's 800m and Saraswati Saha in the women's 100m all tasted gold at the Grand Prix and will be hungry for more.

The meet, which will see an assembly of nearly 600 athletes from 21 states, will vie for honours in 22 events for men and 21 for women. The events:

Men: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, 3000m steeplechase, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discuss throw, javelin throw, hammer throw, 20km walk, Decathlon, 4 x 100m relay and the 4 x 400m relay.

Women: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discuss throw, javelin throw, hammer throw, 20km walk, heptathlon, 4 x 100m relay and 4 x 400m relay.
