CHITTORGARH: International spiker Subba Rao and captain Avnish Kumar Yadav inspired the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Dehra Dun, to a 25-13, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15 win against Cochin Port Turst (CPT) in the National volleyball super league championship at the Pratap Stadium here on Thursday.

Subba Rao blocked and smashed with equal finesse in leading ONGC to its second straight win in the five-team competition. For CPT, the doors to the super league title closed after losing second match in a row.

Morale on the up

Having beaten Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, last night, ONGC had its morale on the up. S.A. Rahul and Abhijeet Bhattacharya joined Subba Rao in guarding the net as ONGC raced to 14-3 lead in the first set. Paul Joseph and M. Prajeev tried their best to bring CPT into the set. Their effort brought some relief to CPT, but ONGC kept a steady lead before closing the set 25-13.

CPT warmed up for a gruelling session as the two teams fought tooth and nail before Subba Rao provided the breakthrough. CPT briefly led but the lanky spiker

Subba Rao's booming smashes helped ONGC equalize before R. Kamraj made it soft drop to put ONGC 2-0 ahead.

CPT libero C.K. Sanal excelled as he set up first set point for his team before Prajeev closed the affair. But Rahul and Subba Rao made right moves before Mithlesh Kumar Singh combined with Subba Rao to block a wild shot to script a well-deserved win for ONGC.

Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) rallied brilliantly from two sets down to take the match into a five-set thriller before beating Central Railway 23-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-11.

In the decider, KSEB had a handy 9-6 lead but Central Railway would not give up too easily. The Solapur-based team came as close as 11-10, but crucial spikes by Gisha Thomas kept KSEB in the lead. Sheeba blocked nicely to give her team first match point before Priyanka Khedekar netted the return to bring an end to an entertaining duel.
