More competition at the top

NEW DELHI: Defending champion Irina Brar is expected to face stiff challenge from some of the younger players in the Mawana Sugars 38th Ladies Northern India golf championship which begins at the Delhi Golf Club course here on November 22.

Over 90 players will form the field that includes talented girls like Bhavna Shetty, Vaishavi Sinha, Sharmila Nicollet, Dimple Minocha, Neha Majithia, Shraddhanjali Singh besides seasoned names like Shruti Khanna, Parnita Garewal, Vandana Garewal, Anjali Chopra and Shalini Malik.

Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, sponsor Siddharth Sriram hoped the presence of more young golfers would lead to some player breaking into the bigger league just as Sania Mirza had done in women's tennis.

This is the fifth major event of the season. Irina won the Madras Open, Bhavna claimed the South India title, Vaishavi Sinha beat the field in the Punjab Open and Shruti emerged best in the Noida Open.

Apart from the winner's trophy, prizes will also be given in the team event, junior girls (under-18) and sub-junior (under-14) categories.

Traditional handicap events, for the Jahanara Challenge Trophy, Mawana Gold Trophy, DLF Challenge Cup, Saman Trophy, Modi Trophy, Mawana Bronze Prize, Talwar Trophy and Sita Rawlley Silver Salver, will also be watched with interest.
