MCH camps inaugurated

HYDERABAD, APRIL 24. The 36-day long Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad's summer coaching camps in 46 disciplines were formally inaugurated by Dr. G. Malsur, Additional Commissioner (Health, Sanitation and Sports), MCH, at a colourful function at Victory Playground here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Malsur reiterated the MCH's resolve to not only tap talent in twin cities but also promote sports in a big way. "We are pleased with the results of these summer coaching camps over the years and hope fresh talent in various disciplines would be unearthed this summer also."

He appealed to the boys and girls of the twin cities to make optimum use of the facilities being provided during these camps.

Mr. S.R. Prem Raj, Director of Sports (MCH), listed out the objectives of the Corporation and the huge network formed to ensure that the camps are more meaningful. The camps are being held in 600 playgrounds with about 650 qualified coaches monitoring the progress of the trainees. It was during one of these camps two decades ago that Abdul Basith was spotted by Mr. L. Venkatram Reddy, secretary, AP Olympic Association, and groomed into a fine volleyball player.

The APOA secretary felt that no Corporation in the country conducted its annual camps on such a big scale. "This is a unique experiment which is being welcomed by many and it is good to see so many youngsters join these camps," he added.

Mr. P. Balaram, MCH games inspector, proposed the vote of thanks.
