‘Deserving players will be picked’

MANGALORE: Karnataka, which is looking to field a relatively young Ranji side for the forthcoming season, will take into consideration performances of its mofussil players, the chairman of state selection committee A. Raghuram Bhat has said.

There will be no neglect of or injustice done to deserving talent while picking up the state squad, he said and added consistent performers will get their due in the scheme of things.

Distributing prizes of Karnataka State Cricket Association, Mangalore Zone and Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association tournaments for 2007 here on Sunday, Mr. Bhat, a former Test player, said the state association will obtain data of all zonal tournaments organised by it. “Consistent performances in these events will be taken into consideration,” he said and added, “Good performances will get its just rewards.”

Noting that the state committee is on the lookout for young and talented players for its senior as well as age group teams, Mr. Bhat advised the players to sacrifice something to realise their cricketing dreams. He urged the local administration and corporate sponsors including ONGC-MRPL to take the lead in setting up a full fledged turf wicket to bring live cricketing action away from established cricketing centre.

Mr. Bhat and group general manager (HR), ONGC-MRPL K. Lakshminarayana distributed trophies of KSCA Mangalore Zone and DKCA tournaments to the winners. They are Gajanana Cricket Club (Ist division winners), City Cricketers (IInd division), Bedra Friends (IIIrd division), Avis Mangalore (Ramco Cup), and Yenepoya Medical and Dental Sciences (Ace Surgical T-20 Cup).
