HYDERABAD Sept. 6. It was Korea's hour in the sun, as its boys and girls' doubles teams conquered China in the Asian junior table tennis championships finals at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy indoor stadium here on Saturday.

Lim Jae Hyun and Jo Eon Rae combined to defeat Zheng Changgong and Ma Long 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6 and bring much cheer to an ecstatic band of Hyderabad-based supporters. Earlier, Lee Eun Hee and Kim Jung Hyun clinched the girls' doubles title, overpowering China's Cao Zhen and Peng Luyang 11-7, 12-10, 2-11, 8-11, 11-5.

Sunday morning's girls' singles semifinals will, however, be an all-China affair, thanks to Li Xiaoxia, Li Qian, Peng Luyang and Fan Ying crushing competition from other nations in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In an extended encounter, Xiaoxia beat compatriot Cao Zhen 11-7, 11-2, 10-12, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4 while Li Qian got the better of Japan's Fukuhara Ai 12-10, 11-3, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7. Luyang nearly went the full distance to outpoint Sayaka of Japan 5-11, 11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-7. Fan Ying conceded a game to Korea's Seo Myeong Eun before posting a 11-1, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6 win.

The contest between Luyang and Sayaka was one of crosscourt rallies, executed from at least six feet away from the table from either end. The pace was furious and it was mostly the Chinese lass' persistence with the push on the shortrange strokes that paid off in the end.

Among the boys, Zheng Changgong needed all the seven games to quell the challenge from Chinese Taipei's Chou Tung Yu. The former, the world's No. 3, found the little-built Yu more than a handful.

Ma Long wasn't expected to beat Korea's top player Lim Jae Hyun, but nonetheless gave the world No. 6 a run for his money. Lim's long reach and better accuracy with the extreme forehand was instrumental in asserting his superiority.

The mixed doubles final on the morrow will be another face-off reserved for Chinese only. Yang Xiaofu/Peng Luyang will take on Ma Long and Fan Ying.
