Karnataka capitulates against Salvi, Hazare

Bangalore: Karnataka struggled on a day of batting horrors and though Thilak Naidu (51) and B. Akhil (55) revived the innings, it was Mumbai that held the reins in the Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group A match that commenced at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday. At close, Mumbai scored one for no loss after Karnataka was bowled out for 186.

The host's optimism when skipper Sujith Somasundar opted to bat soon vanished as the side tottered at 58 for five in 22 overs! The top-order caved in, in the face of some tight bowling by the Mumbai seamers Avishkar Salvi (four for 26) and Swapnil Hazare (four for 47). The duo probed around the off-stump besides darting a few deliveries back into right handers on a pitch that remained two-paced.

Unlucky Barrington

Opener Robin Uthappa dragged Salvi onto his stumps while Barrington Rowland was rapped on the pads. Barrington may have been unlucky as the ball's bounce hinted that it would have sailed over the bails. Salvi's twin strike also inspired Hazare, who snapped up Somasundar, S. Shinde and Stuart Binny — the trio guilty of flashing hard outside the off-stump.

With the lunch score at 96 for five, Thilak and Akhil came up with their rescue-act with a mix of confident shots and dour defence. The duo shared a 70-run sixth-wicket partnership. Thilak essayed crisp shots, slog-sweeping Mumbai skipper Nilesh Kulkarni besides pulling Ramesh Powar into the mid-wicket fence.

Second fiddle

Akhil meanwhile remained content to play second fiddle until Thilak flicked Powar straight to Indulkar at forward short-leg. Thilak failed to capitalise on a reprieve in the same over as Muzumdar dropped him at slip. Akhil had to shepherd the lower-order that sorely missed Dodda Ganesh, who was dropped from the team that favoured Vinay Kumar as the lone specialist seamer.

Akhil dented Powar with some mighty strikes over long-on but fell as Salvi's in-swinger kept surprisingly low and crashed into the stumps. Eventually the innings was snuffed out through wicket-keeper Vinayak Samant's brilliance as he dived low to his left and plucked Raghavendra's snick with his left hand to give Salvi his fourth wicket.
