NEW DELHI JUNE 26. Madhukumar B.M. of Karnataka bettered the National record twice in a day in winning the Group I boys' 50m breaststroke event in the 30th junior National swimming championship at the Talkatora Complex here on Thursday.

The 17-year-old had beaten the National record in the morning heats when he clocked 31.63 seconds. The old record (32.76) was held by Bengal's Gairik Bardhan, who set it in the Chennai Nationals.

In the evening, Madhukumar further shaved off 0.47s from his own timing and won the race in 31.16s. Madhukumar could take pride as Bardhan swam in the lane next to him. Bardhan was home in 32.05s while Punjab's Harpreet Singh (32.77) was third.

After two days of lull, Karnataka's Shubha C. broke the first National record in the girls' section. In the Group II girls' 100m butterfly final, Shubha clocked 1 minute 08.54 seconds to leave the opposition way behind. She was 0.15s better than the old record set by Shikha Tandon in 2000.

The ninth standard student of Good Shepherd School was the best swimmer of the sub-junior Nationals last year. Moving into the junior section this year, Shubha is again on a roll. She won her third straight gold in as many events and will attempt the 200m butterfly and 50m butterfly in the next two days.

The classy Rehan Poncha has somewhat positioned himself for a unique record. So far he has won all the events he has participated in, and with new National record timings.

In the Group I boys' 400m freestyle final, Poncha snatched yet another record from Abhijith J. He won the race in 4 minutes 13.60 seconds while Abhijith's timing stood at 4:14.41.

While Karnataka continued its unsparing dominance, Maharashtra swimmers made some amends and won three gold medals. Tamil Nadu also had one gold on the third day.
