IOC bags women's title

BANGALORE, DEC. 6. The Indian Oil Corporation, which lost its opening tie to BPCL on Sunday, rallied to win its remaining two matches in the round robin and bag the women's team title in the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board's inter-unit table tennis championship in here on Monday.

T. Pradeepa carried the day for IOC winning both her ties in IOC's 3-2 win over ONGC. Later N.R. Indu did the star turn for IOC against OIL.

ONGC was tied for the top spot with IOC with a 2-1 record but the latter was declared winner on account of its victory over ONGC.

In the open events National champion, Sharath Kamal, led the way to the quarterfinals with a fluent 10-12, 11-8, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6 win over veteran S. Ramaswamy of HPCL. Former National champion, Arup Basak, also moved up beating Shivaji Duta of OIL 11-4, 8-11,11-6, 13-11, 11-7. Rajeev Ghai of IOC caused the first upset beating the fourth seed Ranbir Das of ONGC 11-8, 7-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5.

OIL beat BPCL 3-2 (Mouma Das bt Poulomi Ghatak 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7; Nandita Saha bt B. Bhuvaneshwari 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8; Montu Ghosh lost to Sushmita Roy 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 8-11; Nandita Saha lost to Poulomi Ghatak 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 10-12; Mouma Das bt B. Bhuvaneshwari 11-7, 11-1, 8-11, 11-1).
