Indian teams strike gold

NEW DELHI, MARCH 11. The Indian men's and women's teams put up a sparkling show to claim the air rifle gold medals on the opening day of the Commonwealth shooting meet which got underway in Melbourne on Friday.

Apart from these two golden efforts the Indian shooters won two silver and one bronze medals, a National Rifle Association of India release said here.

The Indian women's team, comprising Olympian Anjali Bhagwat and Pournima Zanane, clinched the gold with 785/800.

Singapore (778) and England (777) followed in that order.

The men's squad of Gagan Narang and Manoj Kumar too had it easy as it totalled 1183 to ensure the gold.

Singapore (1167) got the silver and Australia the bronze.

Sushma Rana (570) and Shweta Chaudhary (568) came up with a silver medal in the women's sports pistol team event with 1138/1200.

Australia (1162) took the gold and Malaysia (1127) the bronze.

In men's trap team event, Manavjit Singh (97) and Zorawar Singh (95) gave their Australian counterparts a stiff challenge before settling for silver with 192/200.

Australia (194) won the gold and Wales (190) bagged the bronze.

However, the two-member Indian men's free pistol team had to be content with bronze after Samaresh Jung (559) and Mahavir Singh (506) tallied 1058/1200.

Australia (1082) bagged the gold, while the silver went to England (1065). — UNI
