Hyderabad to host C'wealth volleyball

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad will host the Commonwealth volleyball championship in August 2006, according to L. Venkatram Reddy, secretary of AP Volleyball Association.

Mr Reddy in a press note stated on Saturday that a high-level meeting presided over by K.R. Suresh Reddy, Speaker of the AP Legislative Assembly, reviewed the plans to host the mega event.

The meeting was attended by G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, VC & MD of SAAP, M.S. Raj Thakur, Chairman of SAAP, Mukesh, MLA, and A.P. Jitender Reddy, former MP and vice-president of APVA.

The Government assured the APVA full support in making the event a success. Henceforth, regular meetings will be held to review the pace of work in the run-up to the event in which 12 countries are expected to take part.

Vijaya HS in semifinals

Vijaya HS (Kapra) scored a 5-0 win against Hyderabad PS (Ramanthapur) to move into the semifinal of the second V. Purushotham memorial inter-school hockey tournament at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Saturday. The winner led 2-0 at the break.

S. Abhinav Reddy and S. Srikanth Reddy struck in the first-half. In the second session, Abhinav scored twice more, while B. Prashanth Kumar completed the tally.

In another match, Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 (Uppal) defeated Bhavan's PS 2-1 to make it to the last four. Ram Kumar and C.V. Vivek were the scorers for the winner, while Jagan reduced the margin.

Inter-school sports

The 14th annual Froebel's inter-school sports meet will commence on November 28. Last date for entries has been extended to November 25 and should be sent to the Principal, Froebel's HS (Red Hills), Hyderabad. Competitions will be held in cricket, volleyball, kho-kho, badminton, carrom, chess, table tennis and athletics for boys and girls. Further details may be had on Ph: 23318871 or 23318872.
