Hyderabad speedsters run amok

HYDERABAD NOV. 9. Mumbai fought back remarkably well after being skittled out for its lowest ever score of 98 against Hyderabad to leave the latter in a spot of bother at 82 for five at close on the first day of the four-day Elite Group Ranji Trophy cricket championship match at Gymkhana Grounds here today.

It was a stand-out performance from the Hyderabad medium-pacers spearheaded by the indefatigable Narinderpal Singh (six for 37) and left-armer Vishnuvardhan (three for 36).

If not their hostility, it was certainly their impeccable off-stump line and the abiility to swing the ball appreciably both ways in overcast conditions that had Mumbai on the mat. The Mumbai batsmen looked virtually clueless as they clearly lacked the technical competence andmore importantly the determination to stayput.

But later, the professionalism and the never-say-die attitude of the typical Mumbai sides was to the fore to the chagrin of the host. Led by captain Paras Mhambrey (two for 29) and debutant Avishkar Salvi (two for 22), the visitors nearly nullified the wonderful effort of the home team's bowlers.

Though opener Nandakishore, like N.P. Singh, was determined to silence the Doubting Thomases with a breezy 34 (7 x 4), he once again failed to convert it into a big knock. The rest of the batsmen showed undue inhibition and played into the gameplan of the Mumbai bowlers.
