Huge win for MLI

BANGALOREMYSOREMANGALORE: Maharatta Light Infantry (Belgaum) swamped Army Service Corps (Boys) 9-0 in the State `A' division league hockey tournament here on Friday. Shridhar logged a treble (15th, 26th and 29th), Sanjeeth Ekka scored twice (7th and 31st) and Praful Kumar (22nd), Krishna (42nd),Ganesh Patil (50th) and Amit Kadam (52nd) added to the complement.

In the second fixture of the day, Bharat Electronics limited defeated Reserve Bank of India 5-2. International umpire Raghu Prasad scored thrice (16th, 25th and 60th) and Jeevan (40th and 57th) slotted home the other two. A.K Kavin (35th) and Tanu Nanjappa (52nd off a penalty corner) scored for Reserve Bank of India.

Vijendra triumphs

BANGALOREMYSOREMANGALORE: Y.G. Vijendra and Girish A. Koushik (both from Mysore) tied with 5.5 points each at the end of six rounds, and in the flay-off (tie-break blitz) to decide the winner, Vijendra beat Girish 2-1 and clinched the title in the Independence Day State-level Anchor Trophy's Open chess tournament at Ramnagaram on Wednesday.

Final placings: 1. Y.G. Vijendra (5.5 pts.); 2. Girish A. Koushik (5.5 pts); 3. Manjunath Jain (Mandya - 5 pts); 4. C. Naveen (B'lore - 5 pts.); 5. Anil Kumar (B'lore - 4.5 pts); 6. Syed Shanawaz (Channapatna - 4.5 pts.).

Special Prizes: Best woman players: B. Sandya and Sushma from Maharani's Science College, Bangalore; Best local player: M. Vishal.

BANGALOREMYSOREMANGALORE: A solitary strike by Tajuddin in the 26th minute of second half against Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore helped Tipu Sultan Degree College, Ullal book its place in the final of college section in the football tournament for Independence Cup here on Friday.

In the other semifinal, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore beat St. Philomena College, Puttur 4-3 via tie-breaker to make the final.
