Hard-fought win for Lin Dan

ANAHEIM (U.S.): China's Lin Dan and Zhang Ning, the top seeds in the men's and women's singles at the World badminton championships, recorded hard-fought victories on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals.

Lin, the top men's singles player, recovered from a 5-2 deficit in his first game and a loss in his second for a 15-8, 9-15, 15-5 victory over Japan's Shoji Sato.

Zhang, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist and defending World champion in women's singles, came from behind to beat Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin 4-11, 11-3, 11-4.

In other women's singles matches, second-seeded Xie Xingfang of China earned an 11-4, 11-13, 11-8 victory over Mia Audina Tjiptawan of the Netherlands, the No. 13 seed and 2004 Olympic silver medallist.

In men's doubles Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach, seeded No. 13, rallied to a 15-10, 15-11 victory over Malaysian No. 8 Chew Choon Eng and Choong Tan Fook to become the first Americans to reach the quarterfinals in tournament history.
