Goa stuns Meghalaya

PANAJI, OCT. 7. Savio Fernandes' 80th minute goal helped Goa stun Meghalaya in their last league match of the 27th sub-junior under-16 National football championship here on Thursday evening.

Earlier in the morning, Tamil Nadu trounced Jammu and Kashmir 7-0 and qualifed for the semifinals along with Meghalaya in Group `A.'

Meghalaya and Tamil Nadu are tied with six points from three outings with two wins and a defeat each. Tamil Nadu, though, topped the group with better goal difference, while Meghalaya had to be content with second spot.

Jammu and Kashmir and host Goa with three points each from three outings in group `A' have bowed out of the championship.

Goa surged ahead in the 30th minute of the first half through Cedar Calaco, but Meghalaya levelled in the first minute of the second half through Amity Tongpar.

Both teams then made desperate attempts for the winner and finally Savio Fernandes scored in the 80th minute.

Earlier, Charles' hat-trick helped Tamil Nadu trounce Jammu and Kashmir 7-0.

The teams had an equal share of exchanges in the first half, but Tamil Nadu moved ahead in the 39th minute through Shankar (1-0). Ela Murugan made it 2-0 in the 51st minute and after that, the winner never looked back and scored another five goals in quick succession.

Charles struck in the 64th, 65th and 71st minutes, while Murugan completed his brace in the 70th minute. Devdas scored in the 74th minute to give Tamil Nadu a convincing 7-0 win. — UNI
