East Bengal wins; Bagan held

KOLKATA, JULY 24. East Bengal, set to play in a tournament in England this month, failed to show its prowess as the National Football League champion as it escaped with a lone goal win over Mohammedan Sporting in a Calcutta Football League match at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday.

Brazilian import Douglas da Silva scored the winner in the 68th minute, but the team's showing left many doubting the team's chances abroad.

Fielding its best XI, East Bengal failed to dominate and decimate the opposition. The main reason, obviously, was the lack of form of Bhaichung Bhutia. A miss in the 16th minute and again in the 71st minute left a question mark on the striker's fitness ahead of the England tour. But for Douglas leaping up to nod home the flag kick, the Mohammedan Sporting would have easily shared the day's honour.

In another match, Mohun Bagan and Port Trust played out a goalless draw. — Our Special Correspondent
