DDA felicitates athletes

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Thursday felicitated a bunch of athletes under its athletics promotion scheme for winning laurels at State and National level meets during the course of the year.

Fifteen athletes are currently being trained under the DDA banner, under the guidance of Olympian Gurbachan Singh Randhawa. They are being provided stipend, kit, equipment, travelling allowance, board and lodging expenses while competing outside Delhi, refreshment allowance and an annual insurance cover of Rs 50,000.

Five athletes who performed creditably at the state and national meets with meet records during meets this year were presented cash awards by the DDA Finance Member, A. K. Patnaik, at a simple function at the Siri Fort Complex. They were Ankita Julka (girls under 18 shot put, Rs 2000), Puneet Vij (junior men under 20, discus, Rs 6000) Sanjeev Rathi (boys under16 shot put, Rs 3500), Sourabh Vij (junior men under 20, shot put, Rs 3500 and Ashwani Solanki (boys under-18, shot put, Rs 3500).

Satish Kumar's hat-trick helped Tata Football Academy, Jamshedpur, defeat Shastri Club 4-1 in a Group `B' league match of the second All-India Lt. Governor's invitational DDA football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.

Parvinder was the other scorer for TFA, which now has three points from two matches. Shastri, which found its lone goal through Subhash Negi, remained without a point after two outings.

In another Group `B' match, State Bank of Travancore drew goalless with holder Punjab Police. Both teams have four points each from two matches.

State cross-country championships on Jan. 8

The Delhi State Athletics Association will hold the State cross-country championships at the Nehru Park on January 8. Competitions will be held in the following categories and distances: Boys and girls (under 14) 2km; under-16 3km; Boys (under-18) 6km; Girls (under-18) 6km; Junior men (under 20) 8km; junior women (under 20) 6km; Men 4km and 12km; women 4 km and 8km. The meet will serve as the selection trials to pick the Delhi team for the National cross-country championships to be held at Pune on February. Races will commence at 8 a.m.

enters final

Guru Harkrishan Public School (Punjabi Bagh) defeated Government Model School 5-4 via tiebreaker to enter the final of the all India Sardar Balwant Singh Kapur memorial inter-school hockey tournament at Jalandhar.

In the other semifinal, Jalandhar's Lyalpur Khalsa School beat Government Model School, Sundergarh, 3-0.
