Bopanna beats Elseneer

NEW DELHI: Rohan Bopanna took another sure step towards recovering his form as he beat the 177th ranked fourth seed, Gilles Elseneer of Belgium 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round of the $25,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Manchester on Wednesday.

The 375th ranked Bopanna, who had come through three rounds of the qualifying event, will play the winner of the match between Jean-Miche Pequery of France and lucky-loser Sunil Kumar.

Sunil replaced Harsh Mankad as the latter pulled out with an injury after having originally figured in the main draw.

In doubles, however, Bopanna and Sunil lost 3-6, 2-6 to Andrew Banks and David Sherwood of Britain in the pre-quarterfinals.
