Anilkumar regains title

The seasoned O.T. Anilkumar turned out to be very lucky and won the top prize in the State senior open FIDE-rated chess championship at the Mermaid Inn here on Sunday.

After the final round, six players finished level with seven points each but Kozhikode’s second-seeded Anilkumar, a former multiple Kerala champion, had a minor 0.5 advantage over Kollam’s Jubin Jimmy in the tie-break and that saw him win the title.

Kozhikode’s Athul Krishna, the overnight leader, needed just a draw in the last round to emerge champion but he messed it up, losing to Jimmy, who finished runner-up. Ernakulam’s top-seeded K.U. Marthandan was third.

Another Ernakulam youngster Vinay Thomas Abraham, the defending champion, was 10th.

The tournament had a total prize fund of Rs. 1 lakh and the winner received Rs. 15,000.
