A perfect rally for Aroor

Chennai: " It was a perfect rally for me. The car was handled well and I pushed really hard on both days," said Aroor Arjun Rao after emerging triumphant with co-driver M. Chandramouli in the MRF Rally North at the MAI National competition at Surajkand on Sunday.

The 22-year-old from Mangalore spared six seconds to the former National champion V.R. Naren Kumar (co-driver D. Ram Kumar), who was also driving a Baleno.

This was Aroor's first success in the 2005 championship. Picking up 15 points from Sunday's victory, Aroor has 32 points to Naren's 42, and Balu's 41 in the championship leaderboard with two more rounds remaining.

The outcome, understandably, was a bit of a disappointment for Naren Kumar. "I had the bigger picture in my sights and my main aim was to stay in front of Arjun Balu and get in front of the championship standings. In this context, I am happy at my performance here," he said.

The day was marred by a crash involving the 2004 National champion, Vikram Mathias (co-driver Sujith Kumar) of JK Tyre, as he flipped his Baleno on Special Stage-10 after crossing the flying finish line. While Sujith escapted unhurt, Mathias suffered a wrist injury. — Special Correspondent
