Vinayak vanquishes Villar

VIJAYAWADA: Unseeded Vinayak Sharma upset third seed Juan-Pablo Villar of Argentina 7-6(4), 6-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the ITF Futures men's tournament at the IGMC Stadium here on Wednesday.

Vizag lad Vinayak, down 2-3 in the first set, fought back gallantly. In the tenth game, Vinayak, down two set points, made it 5-5 with a brilliant ace.

After both the players had held their service games, the set entered tie-breaker. At 4-4, Vinayak broke the Argentine and went on hold his serves to win the tie-breaker at 4. Villar failed to win a game in the second set.

Rupesh prevails

Seventh seed Rupesh Roy defeated Vijay Sundar Prashanth 7-6(4), 6-3 in a two-hour long encounter. An evenly-poised first set saw Vijay Sundar commit a crucial double fault in the tie-breaker to allow Roy to win the set 7-6(4). In the second set, Rupesh broke Vijay Sundar in the fourth game and then went on win the match.

Eight seed Nathan Thompson of the United States, who came back from a treatment for dehydration, bounced back to defeat Kamala Kannan 1-6, 6-0, 6-3, while sixth seed Roman Jebavy of Czech Republic beat Sebastian Lavie 6-2, 7-6(3).

Yuki Bhambri and Ranjeet Murugesan moved the quarterfinals defeating Akash Wagh and Israel's Almog Mashiah.
