KOCHI: Chennai’s Vijay Sunder Prasanth, overcame a problem racquet and a young opponent, and won the men’s singles title in the Lotus Trophy all-India tennis tournament at the Lotus Club here on Saturday evening. The 22-year-old defeated his city-mate Irfan Hussain 6-0, 6-4 in the final.

The second-seeded Vijay, ranked No. 21 in the country, won the first set without raising much sweat, repeatedly attacking Irfan’s backhand.

Irfan, 16 and playing his maiden senior final, held his serve for the first time in the second game of the next set. He was on break point in the next game against Vijay, who surprisingly appeared error-prone for a brief period, but the teenager let the opportunity go.

Vijay appeared uncomfortable with his racquet for a few games during the second set. He changed it twice (the strings were loose, he said later).

There were a few long rallies midway through the set and Irfan broke Vijay for the first time in the seventh game and moved to a 4-3 lead.

Vijay, who upset Irfan’s rhythm with some nice volleys and drop shots in the set, broke back immediately and a little later won the match.

“Irfan has improved a lot suddenly, I think he is confident now after pulling off some upsets here,” said Vijay.

Kerala High Court Acting Chief Justice J.B. Koshy gave away the prizes.
