Venkat, Rapoport emerge winners

KOLKATA: Wild card Venkat Iyer won the boys’ singles title beating the favourite Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur, 6-4, 6-2 in an all-Indian final of the ITF juniors tournament at the DKS Sports Complex here on Saturday.

Eight seed Anna Rapoport of Russia defeated fifth seed and defending champion Shweta Kumari Solanki of India 6-1, 6-3 to win the girls’ singles crown.

Venkat took 75 minutes to upset Mohit. There were five breaks in the first set. After breaking Mohit’s serve in the fourth, Venkat failed to hold his own in the fifth. He broke his opponent’s serve in the sixth and held the advantage. Despite losing the ninth game, Venkat regained the initiative by winning the tenth game to take the set in 42 minutes.

Playing his natural game, Venkat broke Mohit in the second and fourth games of the second set while losing his own in the fifth .

Venkat summed up his victory by saying, “since Mohit was the favourite all the pressure was on him. I played my natural game.”

It was far easier for Anna who took a commanding 5-0 lead before losing her serve in the sixth game. She broke back Shweta in the seventh game and took the set 6-1 in 37 minutes. In the second set, Anna lost her first game but broke back in the second. She again broke Shweta in the fourth but lost her serve in the fifth. Anna took the second set and the title after breaking Shweta in the eighth game.

The president of the Bengal Tennis Association Capt. (retd.) Sushil Mehrotra and the president of DKS Prasad Rajan Roy gave away the trophies.

Finals, boys’ singles: Venkat Iyer bt Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur 6-4, 6-2. Doubles: Sidharth Sivakumar & Mansingh Athare beat Ryoto Tachi (Jpn) & Bibaswan Deb 6-4, 6-2.
