Tara picks up another title

NEW DELHI: Tara Iyer defeated Laura Haberkorn of Germany 6-0, 6-1 in the final of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at Wrexham on Saturday.

It was the second singles title at this level for the 19-year-old Tara following the one in Portugal recently.

Tara had to endure a tough start in the tournament as she fought her way past Olivia Howlett of Britain 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 in the first round.

After powering past Anastasia Nebojanko of Britain 6-2, 6-1 in the second round, Tara had to be at her best to beat Louise Dootrelant of France 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Lizaan du Plessis of South Africa 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals.

In doubles, Tara, partnering Katharina Brown of Britain, lost 4-6, 3-6 to Nicole Clerico and Verdiana Verardi. In the semifinals, the Indo-British pair beat second-seeded Naomi Broady and Emily Webley-Smith of Britian 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-2.

Tara had played two $25,000 tournaments in Spain earlier. She had lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-7(8) to Emily Hewson of Australia in the first round at La Coruna. She lost in the third qualifying round to Sacha Jones of New Zealand 4-6, 2-6 in another tournament earlier at Vigo.
