TN meets Delhi in a crucial tie

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Delhi takes on Tamil Nadu in the seventh and final round of the Ranji Trophy Group ‘A’ Super League at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium from Tuesday.

With 18 points, Delhi will seek an outright victory here to qualify for the semifinals . Tamil Nadu (13) needs to romp home with a bonus point – an innings or a ten-wicket victory – to finish on 19 and give itself a slim chance of qualifying.

Other vital games

Tamil Nadu will then have to wait for the results of two other crunch games. Group leader Sourashtra (20) meets Mumbai (18) , while Maharashtra (15) duels it out with Karnataka (10)

Since Delhi has a very realistic chance to enter the knock-out phase there will be more pressure on the visitor.

“We have been doing well as a team all season and we will seek to perform collectively. We will not put any pressure on ourselves,” Delhi coach Vijay Dahiya told The Hindu.

Productive season

This has been a productive season for Delhi. Opener Aakash Chopra (574 runs in six matches at 57.40) has been among the runs and young left-arm paceman Pradeep Sangwan has 20 wickets from six games.

Skipper Mithun Manhas and Shekhar Dhawan have been in fine form with the willow. Rajat Bhatia has been solid at the crease and has chipped in with his medium-pacers. Gautam Gambhir, not included in the India squad to Australia due to fitness concerns, finds a place in the Delhi team.

The barren pitch at Chepauk should assist the spinners and Delhi is likely to include leg-spinner Chaitanya Nanda and offie Narendra Singh in the eleven.

For Tamil Nadu, captain S. Badrinath (639 runs in six matches at 79.87) has made a mountain of runs. Openers, M. Vijay and Abhinav Mukund have impressed. The bigger challenge before the host would be to pick 20 wickets in the contest. The teams: (from): Tamil Nadu: S. Badrinath (capt.), M. Vijay, A. Mukund, R. Srinivasan, K. Shri Vasudeva Das, K.H.
