TN, West Bengal register wins

GUWAHATI: Tamil Nadu men and women and West Bengal women won their respective matches in the volleyball competition of the National Games at the Karambir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

Playing on the wooden flooring, Tamil Nadu men made light of what looked like a tough contest against Punjab in straight sets in Group B.

Tamil Nadu ladies also downed Karnataka 3-0, while West Bengal, a semifinalist at the Raipur National meet, first outplayed Delhi 3-0 and won against Karnataka by an identical margin.

Assam, despite playing a few outstation players, went down to Kerala and Karnataka in the men's section while Kerala ladies had the better of Assamalso 3-0.

With the arrival of Teraflex courts, the second day's proceedings would be played on synthetic courts from Sunday.

Women (Group A): Kerala bt Assam 25-21, 25-16, 25-16; Chandigarh bt AP 25-27, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12.

Group B: TN bt Karnataka 25-11, 25-17, 25-11, West Bengal bt Delhi 25-12, 25-9, 25-10, West Bengal bt Karnataka 25-14, 25-10, 25-16.
