Sardara Singh strikes form

CHANDIGARH: Sardara Singh announced his good form and sound recovery from a recent injury that had kept him away from the Indian squad, with two goals as Haryana defeated Andhra Pradesh 7-3 to book a quarterfinal berth from group ‘G’ in the 57th all India Police hockey championship at the Sector 42 stadium here on Saturday.

Jatinder Singh (2), Dinesh Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Dharamvir scored the other goals for Haryana which recorded its second triumph in the league, to fetch a quarterfinal clash against Maharashtra.

In the other quarterfinals, Punjab Police will be challenged by Karnataka; Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will play Jammu and Kashmir and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will take on Border Security Force (BSF).

Karnataka drew 1-1 with Orissa and tied with the team on three points. However, Karanataka made the knock-out on the basis of its better goal difference.

Karnataka shot ahead in the 14th minute through N.B. Pradeep. Orissa scored the equaliser four minutes into the second half thanks to the goal by John Minz.

Jammu and Kashmir made the grade from group ‘D’, as it outclassed Rajasthan 8-1. Skipper Gurtej Singh (3), Amrinder Pal Singh (2), Sartaj Singh, Satwant Singh and Onkar Singh scored for the winner. Harish reduced the margin for Rajasthan.

In an inconsequential group ‘F’ match, Railway Protection Force beat Chandigarh 2-1 thanks to goals by Aleo Lawrance and Vijay Xalxo. Dharampal had put Chandigarh ahead in the second minute.
