Ana Ivanovic comes back from the brink

Hobart: Sixth seed Sania Mirza advanced to the quarterfinals of the $1,70,000 Moorilla Hobart International with a straight-set victory over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva here on Tuesday. Sania beat Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-4 to enter the last-eight stage of the Tier IV hard court event.

The Indian will now be up against Italian Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta advanced after Australian qualifier Jelena Dokic pulled out midway through the first set of their second-round match. Pennetta led 5-0 when Dokic retired from the match.

Earlier, Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou claimed her first victory in three attempts against Alona Bondarenko to oust the top seed on Tuesday.

Daniilidou, ranked 42, outmanoeuvred the Ukranian 6-3, 6-3 and will now take on Australian Casey Dellacqua in the quarterfinals. Second-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva defeated Ioana Paluca Olaru from Romania 6-3, 6-2 to book her passage to the quarters.

Good day for Serbia

World number four Ana Ivanovic clawed back from 2-5 down in the final set to reach the women’s quarterfinals of the Sydney International with a three-set victory on Tuesday over France’s Virginie Razzano.

The 20-year-old Serbian looked headed for an upset second-round defeat before she rallied to win 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 in just over two hours to set up a quarterfinal with Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia.

It proved a good day for the Serbian contingent with third seed Jelena Jankovic winning the late match against Tatiana Golovin of France 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

Confidence

Ivanovic, who had a stern workout in contrast to world number one Justine Henin, who had a walkover into the Sydney quarters, said the match had given her confidence ahead of the Australian Open.

“I am coming into the new season looking for some tough matches and to get through them and win those matches,” she said.

Rain thwarts play

Chile’s double Olympic champion Nicolas Massu advanced to the second round of the Auckland Open with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over New Zealand qualifier G.D. Jones as persistent rain prevented much of Tuesday’s play.

Only three matches were completed in the morning before the weather stopped any further play.
