Samuel stars in MSU’s big win

Kayalpatnam: Riding on three goals by midfielder Samuel Jackson, the Tamil Nadu State champion Madras Sporting Union, Chennai posted a 5-1 victory over Tuticorin District Football Association President’s XI in the 43rd annual Maulana Abul Kalam Azad memorial Trophy all-India football tournament here.

Sporting Union thus entered the quarterfinals. At half-time, the teams were level 1-1.

Vembarasan put Sporting Union in lead in the 12th minute finishing a fine pass from Samuel Jackson.

President’s XI found the equaliser in the 24th minute as Obeth scored off a rebound from Sporting goalkeeper Moses.

Immediately on resumption fastening on to a pass at the top of the box from Vembarasan, Samuel Jackson dribbled past two defenders and scored from close range for a 2-1 lead.

In the 53rd minute, Devaraj took a free kick from near the top of the box and goalkeeper Abdul Kasim fumbled. Samuel took advantage of the rebound and scored his team’s third goal.

Jeyaseelan scored the fourth goal in the 55th minute and Samuel Jackson completed the tally in the 58th minute. — Sports Correspondent
