CHENNAI: Sports Authority of India beat AGORC 2-1 in the St. Joseph’s-Chennai Football Association senior division league here on Wednesday.

In the seventh minute, SAI’s Mukeshwaran send a cross to teammate Vengadesan, who trickled the ball past the advancing goalkeeper for the first goal. Soon after, J. Suresh pumped in a floating pass by Ranjith Kumar to make it 2-0.

AGORC’s only success came in the 23rd minute, when A. Justin Antony dribbled his way into the SAI penalty area, wrong-footed the goalkeeper, and then placed an angled right-footer into the far right corner of the net.

Meanwhile, in the CFA first division league, Chennai City Police beat Perambur Blues 2-1. Mohd. Nuffarullah Khan scored a brace for the wining team. Pari scored the lone goal for the loser.

Customs rallies well

Chennai Customs recovered from 2-0 down to win its Don Bosco-Fr. McFerran Trophy first round match against a Goa under-21 side 4-2 in Chennai on Wednesday.

Goa looked a far more accomplished side as it opened a two-goal margin in just over half an hour. Midfielder Rosario Mendes split the Customs defence with a forward pass from the centre circle, met inches from the keeper’s fingertips by the onrushing Joshua Vaz, who toe-poked in adroitly.

In the 33rd, Rosario’s midfield partner Valeriano Rodriguez was the most alert of a mass of players in the Customs box, stretching his left foot around Customs’s Abey to scramble in a loose ball.

In the 43rd minute, the home side’s Abey swerved the ball around the Goa backline to left winger Kumar with the outside of his right foot. Kumar volleyed sweetly on the bounce, into the far corner. Custums’s equaliser came in the 48th minute as midfielder Williams, receiving the ball high up in the Goa half, spotted winger Vinith racing unmarked up the right touchline, and played it into his path. Vinith met the ball in the box, and shot low and across the keeper into the far corner.

Vinith put Customs ahead in the 77th minute, controlling a cross from Praveen Jose with a lovely first touch in the box before finishing cleverly with the outside of his foot.

Goa conceded another on the break in the final minute. Customs forward Ramesh beat Goa’s offside line — stationed on the halfway line — to collect a Williams pass and sprinted up the pitch to beat keeper Agnelo Gomes at the near post.
