S. Railway wins

KOCHI: Southern Railway made a winning return to Kochi after five years when it bagged the 22nd BPCL Kochi Refinery all-India cricket title at Ambalamugal on Saturday. The Chennai side, the champion in its last appearance here five years ago, thrashed defending champion Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) by six wickets in the final.

Off-spinners V. Umapathy (three for 39) and M.E. Sanu (three for 18), with three wickets each, gave Railway a huge advantage when it dismissed the Bangalore side for a paltry 129 .

M.P. Govindarajan, GM, HR, BPCL gave away the prizes.

The scores: Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) 129 in 37.3 overs (Sreevats 40) lost to Southern Railway (Chennai) 131 for four in 29.3 overs (Rohan Prem 50 n.o., Khader Basha 46). — Principal Correspondent
