Ronaldo’s penalty gives United win

LONDON: Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty gave Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Everton and a five-point lead at the top of the English Premier League football on Saturday.

Ronaldo stroked his spot kick past Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard — his former Old Trafford teammate — in the 44th minute as the Red Devils won for the seventh league game in a row without conceding a goal. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has now gone an English record 1,120 minutes without letting in a goal.

The victory means that United is now on 53 points and has a five-point advantage over Chelsea and Liverpool. Fourth place Aston Villa and fifth place Arsenal lost ground on the leader when they were each held 0-0 at home. Villa was held by Wigan while the Gunners were held by West Ham.

Tottenham tumbled 3-2 at Bolton where the host’s Kevin Davies scored one goal and set up two. Spurs hit back from two goals down to level after two goals by substitute Darren Bent, but Davies netted an 87th-minute winner for his eighth goal of the season.

The results: Arsenal 0 drew with West Ham 0; Aston Villa 0 drew with Wigan 0; Bolton 3 (Puygrenier 31, K. Davies 64, 87) bt Tottenham 2 (Bent 73, 75); Fulham 3 (Johnson 14, Nevland 71, 80) bt Portsmouth 1 (Nugent 84); Hull 2 (Mendy 44, Fagan 69) drew with West Brom 2 (Simpson 53, Brunt 73-pen); Manchester United 1 (Ronaldo 44-pen) bt Everton 0; Middlesbrough 0 drew with Blackburn 0. — Agencies
