Reji-Madhu pair enters second round

THIRUVALLA: Reji and Madhu entered the second round in the men’s doubles event of the inaugural YMCA Jacob memorial all-Kerala prize money doubles badminton tournament at the YMCA floodlit indoor stadium on Saturday.

Reji and Madhu defeated Sam and Anish 21-7, 21-7 in the first round. The tournament was inaugurated by Arjuna award winner George Thomas.

The results (doubles): Men (first round): Reji / Madhu bt Sam / Anish 21-7, 21-7; Denny / Jismon bt Roy / Dileep 21-18, 21-19.

Under-21: second round: Titty Thomas / Binu bt Shobit / Ajith 21-16, 21-16. First round: Serin / Jikku bt Vishal / Justin Kuriakose 21-12, 21-10; Shobit / Ajith bt Shiju / Justin 21-16, 14-21, 21-15.

Murugan CC advances

Murugan CC defeated New Kids, Chenganoor, by 81 runs to move into the third round of the 14th Celestial Trophy all-Kerala cricket tournament at the Medical College ground, Thiruvananthapuram, on Saturday.

In another match, Xmind Fighters CC scored a thrilling 13-run win over Benix CC in a low scoring encounter.

The scores: Murugan CC 263 for four in 30 overs (Venkatesh 83, Rajesh 57, Mahesh 40) bt New Kids, Chenganoor, 182 for six in 27 overs (Milansam 60, Jagadeesh 50, Sreenivasan four for 23); Xmind Fighters CC 99 in 20 overs (Aneeshraj five for 22) bt Benix CC 86 in 24.1 overs (Paramesh three for five).

Referees’ clinic

The practical test and referees’ clinic for basketball referees, who have passed their written exams held during the State senior championships in Kottayam, will be held at Mangalpuzha Seminary in Aluva on Monday. Those interested in appearing for fresh exam should report to Rev. Dr. Philips Wadakekalam, chairman, board of referees of the Kerala Basketball Association at the venue.

Punjabi triumphs

Punjabi beat Kannur 15-14 to win the women’s Epee team gold in the all-India inter-university fencing championship in Kannur on Saturday.

Other results (semifinals): Punjabi bt Bangalore 15-4; Kannur bt Kurukshetra 15-7.
