Ratheesh shines for CPT

KOCHI: Ratheesh scored twice, in the 24th and 51st minutes, as Cochin Port Trust defeated Udaya Sporting Club 2-1 in the Wayna Cochin Premier League football championship at the Maharaja's Stadium here on Wednesday evening.

Justin netted Udaya's consolation goal in the 75th minute.

The victory helped Cochin Port take the third spot in Group ‘B'.

The championship's league phase ended on Wednesday and the semifinals will be played after Malabar United and Golden Threads return from their Second Division I-League matches in Bangalore.

Josco vs Golden Threads

Josco FC, the Group ‘A' topper, will meet Golden Threads in the Cochin Premier League semifinals while Group ‘B' topper Malabar United will line up against Central Excise. The semifinal dates are yet to be finalised.

Basketball court opened

The newly-built basketball court at St. Joseph's Orphanage was inaugurated by Pathanamthitta District Sports Council president Kochueppan Mapillai at a simple function at Puthussery on Tuesday.

The function was presided over by Changanassery Procurater Fr. Mathew Odanaly. Fr. Thomas Thanniath, Director of the orphanage, welcomed the gathering. It was followed by an exhibition match between Tiruvalla Basketball Club and the Orphanage basketball team.

CWG campaign

Kochi will have its first small taste of the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in New Delhi in October, this weekend.

As part of the national awareness campaign for the Commonwealth Games, a painting competition for school children from classes 1 to 12 (5-17 years) will be held at the Maharaja's College Centenary Hall between 9 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. on April 3.

Kerala Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the awareness campaign at the Children's Park (near the Government Guest House) at 5.30 p.m. on April 4. District Collector M. Beena and Jiji Thomson, the Special Director General of the Games' organising committee, will also attend the function.

Display of posters, exhibition of select paintings at the Children's Park and the introduction of ‘Shera', the Games mascot, will also be held in Kochi as part of the campaign. The prizes for the painting competition will be distributed at the Children Park at 5.30 p.m. on April 4.

Bhuvath to lead

Sherin Bhuvath will lead the State senior men's team that will take part in the National cycle polo championship, which will be held in Jaipur in April.
