Railway basketball from today

CHENNAI: The Southern Railway Sports Association (SRSA) will conduct the all-India Railway basketball (men’s and women’s) championships at the Nehru Indoor Stadium here from November 20 to 26. Twenty teams in the men’s section and 10 in the women’s section will be participate.

Leading women hoopsters Geetu Anna Jose, P. Anitha, Manisha, Anju Arnika among others will be taking part.

Speaking to newspersons on Monday, S. Anantharaman, Secretary, SRSA, said that this tournament would be a selection trial to pick the Railways team for the National championship to be held in Puducherry next month. The men’s event consists of four groups of five teams each. The top two sides from each group will enter the quarterfinals.

In the women’s category, 10 teams have been divided into two groups wherein the top two teams from each group will enter the semifinals. South Central Railway and Southern Railway are the defending champions in the men’s and women’s sections respectively.

Hukku shines

Captain Shikkar Hukku’s all-round performance (59 and three for nine) helped St. John’s ES & JC enter the final of the Godrej city schools under-14 cricket tournament with a 128-run win over MCC in a semifinal match.

The scores: St. John’s 195 for seven in 30 overs (S.R. Vibhu 58, Shikkar Hukku 59) bt MCC 67 for nine in 30 overs (Shikkar Hukku three for nine, R. Vishwanath four for five).

Srinivasan-Suresh pair wins

V. Srinivasan and Abinav Suresh (37 points, on better back nine) won the Foster Memorial Cup golf doubles tournament at the Gymkhana annexe in Chennai on Sunday. P. Mukherjee and V. Sanjay Kumar pair (37 points) finished second.
